Israel based type designer Moshik Nadav is currently studying in Bezalel – Academy of Art and Design.
Your typeface is very elegant, where did the inspiration for it come from and why?Well, It all began two years ago when I looked for a logo for my T-shirt design project.
First I wanted to call the brand my name, Moshik, and I remember that I tried to design something different and unique.
In the end, I decide to use GraphicTee as the brand name, not Moshik. It’s not a secret that I love to play with shapes and create new things with them, even Typefaces. The whole Typeface was created in one of the courses that I took in OCAD – Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto, Canada. OCAD is a highly regarded design school and I studied there for one semester on a student exchange program from my school, Bezalel, Israel. I was asked to design a Typeface for one of the assignments. My idea was to design a royalty Typeface but I didn’t want it to have an old style like all the existing fancy script Typefaces, so I used decorative shapes and I gave them a fresh and new look. My goal was to create a Typeface that has never been seen before. I have only published the lowercase letters as I am working on the uppercase letters at the moment. I am also working on the punctuations and the numbers. These will be published very soon.
How would you describe your dreams in words? My dreams was one of my favourite projects! That project was made last year during an Illustration course in Bezalel. My assignment was to describe my pesah holiday (Jewish holiday).
On Pesah we have three weeks off school in which I take this time to SLEEP! I wanted to let people get into my creative dreams, letting them open their minds and guess what I’m dreaming of. So what do you think I dream of?
The whole project was made using paper. No computers were involved in the proccess.
What do you want to know about the future?Future. It’s such a big thing. Well, I don’t really want to know now, I prefer to discover it in real time, I love surprises!
You’re a type designer, which type do you find most fits the clients brief? As a Typographer, I can say with no doubt that I prefer to use Helvetica for most of my designs. Of course there are situations that I need to choose different Typefaces but that really depends on the concept. But Helvetica is my favourite.
Pencil & Paper Vs Digital Pen & Tablet, who wins?Today everything is becoming digital, and I’m a freak of gadgets and new stuff, but if I need to think about my design process I can’t imagine myself working and developing a new concept without my pencil and sketchbook. For me, it doesn’t make sense to start working straight onto the computer. Every time I get a new brief I immediately open my sketchbook and write down all my ideas. Even if they are stupid it gives me something to start with. When I’m totally sure that my idea is good, most of the times, I open my mac and start designing it digitally.
